Sun Safety: Beware of Preconceptions!

7 false ideas about the sun:

1. You can’t get sunburned when it is cloudy : FALSE Depending on the type and density of cloud cover, from 15 to 90% of UV can still get through! It is essential to protect yourself even when it is cloudy.
2. With light skin you have to stay out longer in order to tan : FALSE ! Staying out in the sun longer will only damage your skin. Choose a progressive tanning regime, with short and protected exposures.
3. Dark and olive skins don’t need sunscreen : FALSE ! If dark and olive skins do defend themselves better than lighter skins, they are not immune to premature skin aging caused by unprotected exposure.
4. Self-tanners protect against sunburn. : FALSE ! Self-tanning products color your skin but do not strengthen it against UV. However, it is true that it is not bad for the skin.

6. You are protected from the sun in the shade or in the water : FALSE ! Even in the shade, some UV light manages to get through, either by reflecting or diffusion. In the same way, water does not block UV and can even increase radiation on some parts of the body.
7. You can stay out in the sun longer with a high SPF sunscreen. : FALSE ! Sunscreens limit the damage of the sun for a given time period, but do not necessarily mean that you can stay out for longer: especially if you are doing sporting activities or in the water. It is always recommended to re-apply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming.
