How do dark spots form?

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color and helps protect it from the sun’s aggressions. It is produced by specialized cells (melanocytes) and then distributed across the skin’s surface.

But with excessive sun exposure, hormonal changes, or inflammation, this process can become unbalanced. The result: an overproduction of melanin that is unevenly distributed. It builds up in certain areas, forming visible dark spots.

These spots can take weeks to fade naturally. That’s why it’s important to act at the source of these imbalances to restore an even, radiant, spot-free complexion.

Learn more about dark spots

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by several factors:

• Exposure to sunlight
• Skin aging
• Skin inflammation (irritation, friction, breakouts, acne-related blemishes…)
• Hormonal fluctuations
• Genetic predisposition
• Blue light and pollution, which generate free radicals
It affects all skin phototypes, from the lightest to the darkest.
Whatever the root cause, the underlying mechanism is the same: overproduction of melanin.

The most common forms:
• Melasma or pregnancy mask: hormone-related dark spots
• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: marks following irritation or acne
• Solar lentigines: brown spots caused by skin aging and sun exposure
