Part of organizing your holidays is packing your suitcase, and with it comes an often-asked question: is my sunscreen still usable? Today, we'll answer it.
Question 1 : What does it say on the tube ?
Like every beauty or skincare product, sunscreens have a use-by date after opening called “Period After Opening” or PAO. The PAO shows the date after which the product’s properties are no longer guaranteed. This indication is materialized by an icon of a container displaying the number of months the product is considered effective. If you see “12M”, that means that once opened, you have 12 months to use the product.
Question 2 : How was your product used and stored ?
Unfortunately, seaside holidays only last so long, and your tube of sunscreen comes back with you, often open, rarely empty. Therefore, at the beginning of your current vacation, you might be tempted to use it again. If the use-by date has not gone by, you can, but only under certain circumstances. Indeed, you have to be absolutely sure that it was not exposed to excessive heat and that no sand or water got into the tube.
Question 3 : What does the product look like ?
Finally, the last step before thinking about reusing last year’s sun protection is testing it. First, check if, without shaking the tube, the cream that comes out has an oily liquid along with it. If so, it is time to throw it away and move on. Next, check its texture. It should be perfectly uniform, and its color too. While we are at it, remember to shake your sunscreen before using it to make it more fluid. Finally, hold the tube up to your nose and ensure no unpleasant odors emerge.
