Gentle Oleo-Calcareous Liniment – How to Use the Star of Your Baby Toiletry Bag

Not yet fully developed, the skin of newborns is fragile; dehydration and reddening can occur without warning because the barrier formed by the outermost layer of the skin is imperfect, and the acid mantle is delicate. It is thus absolutely essential to take good care of your baby's skin right from birth, nurturing it and protecting it with specially-designed products. Today, we wanted to take a moment to highlight one of the star ingredients of our Baby Care Products, our Gentle Oleo-Calcareous Liniment, a product made specifically for the diaper area.

What is an “Oleo-Calcareous Liniment”?

An Oleo-Calcareous Liniment is a type of French skincare tradition that goes back centuries. Originally, it was a simple mix of equal parts plant oil and limewater. The myriad virtues of this mix make it your best friend when it comes to cleaning and protecting your baby’s little butt and, above all, preventing diaper rash. At Laboratoires de Biarritz, we looked to the oceans to enrich the traditional liniment thanks to a choice of targeted, 100% natural ingredients. Our Alga-Paisium (from brown algae) soothes and prevents irritation caused by urine and the rubbing of diapers. Organic Virgin Olive Oil and Organic beeswax nurture, protect, and create a protective layer over the skin of the baby’s butt. As for the calcium hydroxide (the mineral mix that creates limewater), it balances the skin’s pH to natural physiological levels to neutralize the acidic effect of urine.

When & How Do You Use It?

The Gentle Oleo-Calcareous Liniment can be used from birth until your child no longer wears diapers. If the diaper area is only dirtied with urine, you can use the liniment directly and it will cleanse and protect. However, if the diaper area has also been dirtied with stool, first you will need to clean the buttocks (for example, with Micellar Water) before applying liniment. After shaking the container well to homogenize the mix (at rest, the liniment separates into two layers), pour a small amount of the product onto a washable and reusable cotton pad or compress and apply it on your baby’s skin. Do not go overboard with it, as an excess of liniment can sully the diaper. Let it soak in for a few seconds after application, and that is it! Your baby’s skin is now well-protected from future dirtying that could cause it harm. Your little darling can go back to exploring the world carefree. Recommended for preventing diaper rash, you can alternate it with simple soap & water, being extra careful to dry all of the area’s skin folds.

Note that in case of existing diaper rash, do not use the Gentle Oleo-Calcareous Liniment. You will need a reparative changing cream, like the one in our Laboratoires de Biarritz Baby Care range.
